Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to pursue the overthrow of Iran’s government, arguing that its fall would also pave the way for eliminating Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Netanyahu made the remarks at the opening ceremony of the academic year at the new Tel Hai University in Kiryat Shmona, near Israel’s border with Lebanon, according to The Times of Israel.
He said Israeli forces had made significant progress in pushing Hezbollah back but would continue military operations until their objectives were achieved.
Netanyahu described the fall of Iran’s government as the ultimate goal, portraying the leadership in Tehran as the central source of regional threats. He argued that removing it would weaken Hezbollah and create conditions for peace with Lebanon.
The Israeli prime minister also said he had discussed the goal of toppling Iran’s government with US President Donald Trump on several occasions, including two days before his remarks.
Netanyahu claimed that as long as Iran’s current government remained in power, it would continue trying to develop nuclear weapons and rebuild its regional alliance network, despite suffering significant setbacks.
He argued that removing the government was the only way to prevent such threats and would make it easier to eliminate Hezbollah.
The remarks underscore Israel’s stated ambition to confront Iran’s regional influence, with potential implications for security and stability across the Middle East.
