DHAKA: The withdrawal of party symbols from the upcoming local government elections reflects the statesmanlike attitude of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, said his Political Adviser, Zahir Uddin Swapon, who holds ministerial rank.
He warned that organisational action would be taken against anyone who defied party decisions by contesting independently or working against the party-backed candidates.
He urged leaders and activists at all levels to work for candidates supported by the party in the upcoming elections.
Swapon made the remarks during discussions with leaders and activists of the BNP in his constituency, Barishal-1, while visiting more than 100 Durga Puja mandaps in Gournadi and Agailjhara upazilas from Tuesday morning until late at night.

Leaders of the puja committees in the two upazilas accompanied him, along with Barishal North District BNP Member Secretary Mizanur Rahman Khan Mukul, Gournadi Upazila BNP Convener Syed Sarwar Alam, Member Secretary Sharif Zahir Sajjad Hannan, Agailjhara Upazila BNP Convener Shikder Hafizul Islam and Member Secretary Molla Bashir Ahmed Panna, among others.
Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Swapon said the prime minister had issued clear directives on how the party should approach the local government elections.
“The party will not forgive those within its ranks who betray it,” he said.
He added that the party had information on every union and would support only candidates considered acceptable to the people in the upcoming elections.
“Anyone whose anti-disciplinary activities harm the party will face punishment for acting against it, regardless of how senior a leader they are,” Swapon said.
He said the party would closely monitor the election-related activities of all its leaders and activists.
