The United States and Israel have drawn up plans for fresh military strikes on Iran following the US midterm elections, scheduled for November 3. The two countries are stepping up preparations for a possible short but intense military campaign against Iran soon after the elections.
The information was reported by the US newspaper The New York Times. However, the newspaper did not specify exactly when the strikes might take place.
Citing several US officials and people familiar with the plans, the report said the United States and Israel had intensified their military exercises in preparation for a possible operation. As part of these preparations, aircraft are practising strike tactics by flying through the airspace of Iraq, Iran’s neighbour to the west. However, these preparations do not necessarily mean that a final decision to launch an attack has been made.
Potential targets include Iran’s energy infrastructure, nuclear facilities, and stockpiles of missiles and drones. Citing US officials, the report said another major attack could push Iran’s economy into an even deeper crisis. Some officials believe such action could force Tehran to make concessions in diplomatic negotiations.
However, it remains uncertain whether US President Donald Trump will ultimately approve the military plan. The possibility of strikes as early as October has not been entirely ruled out, although the report described that scenario as unlikely. Source: The New York Times.
