French President Emmanuel Macron has strongly criticised what he called “stupid comments” by foreign leaders, including US President Donald Trump, about the ongoing violence and protests in France, accusing them of making the remarks for political gain.
Speaking to reporters during a visit to Qatar, Macron did not initially name anyone but said that, following Saturday’s riots, many had made comments through the “manipulation” of information that were both unacceptable and stupid. He added that foreign leaders were among those responsible.
Asked whether he was referring to Donald Trump, Macron replied, “Among others, he is.”
Trump has been campaigning for his Republican Party ahead of the US midterm elections. During this period, he blamed “immigrants, jihadists and communists” for the violence in France.
“Some leaders who are in the middle of election campaigns, whether in this region or across the Atlantic, are spreading narratives in good faith that certain groups are clearly seeking to promote,” Macron told reporters.
The French president said, “They are using our country for their own political campaigns. We do not need this. We already have enough problems of our own to deal with.”
Macron also said AI-generated images were circulating online depicting incidents in France that had never actually occurred. Some people were claiming that large numbers of immigrants and Islamists had entered the country, he said, adding that these claims were entirely false. Source: Agencies.
