Flooding persisted across seven districts on Saturday (July 11), though slightly reduced rainfall over the past 24 hours has eased fears of a further rapid deterioration.
According to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), water levels at six monitoring stations on four rivers remain above the danger mark.
These include Bandarban and Dohazari points on the Sangu River, Markuli in Sunamganj and Fenchuganj in Sylhet on the Kushiyara River, the Manu River in Moulvibazar, and the Balla station on the Khowai River in Habiganj.
FFWC Executive Engineer Sardar Uday Raihan said flooding is currently affecting Sylhet, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar and Bandarban.
He warned that heavy rainfall is likely to continue in south-eastern Bangladesh, particularly in the Chattogram region, over the next 24 hours, limiting chances of immediate improvement. Flooding may also spread to the Feni region during this period.
However, Raihan noted that rainfall in both the north-east and south-east has decreased compared to the previous two days, calling it a positive sign. If this trend continues on Monday, flood conditions are expected to gradually improve.
Authorities are also closely monitoring the Teesta River in the north, which may cross the danger level at several points within the next 48 hours.
Meanwhile, water levels in the country’s major rivers—the Ganges and the Jamuna—remain below danger levels, with the Jamuna already showing signs of receding, offering some relief.
