COX’S BAZAR: The Coast Guard seized 50,000 yaba tablets worth an estimated Tk 2.5 crore during an operation on the Naf River near Nazirpara of Shah Porir Dwip in Teknaf on Wednesday night.

The tablets were found in a sack floating in the river, Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon said on Thursday morning.

Acting on intelligence information, a team from the Coast Guard’s Shah Porir Dwip Outpost conducted a special operation in the area and recovered the consignment, he said.

The estimated market value of the seized tablets is Tk 2.5 crore, indicating the scale of the suspected drug shipment, according to the Coast Guard official.

The tablets were seized from the river, but no information was immediately available about who had placed the sack there or who owned the consignment.

Legal proceedings are under way in connection with the seizure, Sabbir Alam Sujon said.

The Naf River, which forms part of the Bangladesh-Myanmar border, has long been a route used by drug smugglers to bring yaba and other narcotics into Bangladesh. Security agencies regularly conduct operations in the border area to prevent the trafficking of illegal drugs.
