DHAKA: A 41-year-old man, identified as Md Alam Sheikh, was beaten to death on suspicion of being a child thief at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka. The incident took place late Wednesday night. His family said he was mentally unstable.
Sheikh Rimon Mia, a sub-inspector of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, confirmed the incident to the media on Thursday. He said police contacted Alam Sheikh’s family after the incident, and they reported that he was mentally unstable and had suffered a stroke.
Describing the incident, SI Rimon Mia said Alam Sheikh was wandering in front of the hospital’s paediatric ward around 11pm on Wednesday. At that time, relatives of children receiving treatment at the hospital suspected him of being a child thief.
The children’s relatives asked him why he had come to the hospital, but he could not provide a satisfactory answer. Enraged, they dragged him downstairs and brutally beat him, resulting in his death, the police officer said.
He added that Alam Sheikh’s identity was confirmed through fingerprint matching. He lived in the tin-shed housing area of Rupnagar in the capital.
