CUMILLA: Police have submitted a charge sheet against four people in the sensational murder case of Ishayat Shahriar Apratim in Cumilla.
Additional Superintendent of Police Md Lutfur Rahman confirmed the development on Friday morning (October 23).
Police said a charge sheet has been filed against four suspects, including two minors, in connection with the murder of Apratim, son of Dr Nahida Begum, a teacher at Cumilla University. The investigation found evidence of their involvement in the killing. Investigators concluded that Apratim was murdered to snatch his mobile phone.
The accused are Saiful Islam alias Tuhin, 19, Md Siam, 19, and two minors aged 15 and 16. They have been charged under Sections 302, 201 and 34 of the Penal Code. The two minors have been identified as children in the charge sheet in accordance with the Children Act. They are currently being held at the Child Development Centre in Gazipur.
The investigation officer submitted the charge sheet to the court on October 20, although it has not yet been presented before the court.
Apratim’s father, businessman KM Firoz Shahriar, said he learned about the submission of the charge sheet on Thursday night but did not know the details of those charged. He demanded a speedy verdict in the case.
He also alleged that the ages of two accused had been understated. He called for their ages to be reassessed through DNA testing to ensure proper justice.
Additional Superintendent of Police Md Lutfur Rahman said the charge sheet had been prepared and submitted to the court. The investigation found that Apratim was killed to snatch his mobile phone, he said.
Apratim went missing from the Kotbari area of Cumilla on the afternoon of September 18 after leaving home to take photographs with his iPhone. He did not return that day, prompting his father to file a general diary (GD) with Sadar South Police Station.
The following day, September 19, police recovered his body from a wooded area in Sananda, in the Lalmai Hills near Cumilla University. The accused were later arrested after police analysed CCTV footage.
The killing sparked widespread public concern across the country. The suspects were also alleged to have links to a juvenile gang, prompting police to launch a sweeping crackdown on juvenile gangs across Cumilla.
