Ferry operations at Terminal No. 3 on the Daulatdia end of the Daulatdia-Paturia route in Rajbari have been suspended temporarily after a pontoon component was damaged by strong river currents, disrupting vehicle crossings and causing long queues on the Dhaka-Khulna highway.
The damage to the pontoon’s finger forced the terminal to close on October 7, according to a report published by Kalbela on October 8.
Vehicles waiting to cross the Padma River formed a queue stretching more than two kilometres along the highway, causing considerable suffering for passengers and drivers.
With Terminal No. 3 out of service, only Terminals No. 4 and 6 were operating at the time, according to the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC).
BIWTC officials said repair work was underway and the terminal could reopen once the work was completed, depending on the river conditions.
Strong currents have also slowed ferry operations on the busy Daulatdia-Paturia route, which connects the capital with Bangladesh’s southwestern region.
