Speaker of Bangladesh National Parliament Hafiz Uddin Ahmed is set to visit Tehran to attend the funeral of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at the invitation of his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.
A diplomatic source told journalists that the Speaker is scheduled to leave for the Iranian capital on July 3 to take part in the state funeral ceremonies.
According to officials at Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Iran has formally invited the Speaker to attend the funeral of Khamenei.
In the invitation letter, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf expressed his country’s desire to host the Bangladesh Speaker at what he described as a “historic and solemn occasion.”
Accepting the invitation, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed will represent Bangladesh at the funeral programme in Tehran.
The Iranian government has planned several days of state mourning and funeral ceremonies in honour of the late leader. The official programme is set to begin with the first funeral prayer on July 4, followed by a second prayer in the holy city of Qom on July 7. A final funeral prayer will be held on July 9 before Khamenei is laid to rest in Mashhad, in northeastern Iran.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who served as Iran’s Supreme Leader for 36 years, was killed on February 28 at the age of 86 in a joint US-Israeli attack.
