Rangpur: National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener and Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam said that if former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina returns to Bangladesh, “the gallows will be ready for her.” He warned that the people of Bangladesh would not forgive her unless she faces justice.
Nahid Islam made the remarks on Saturday while addressing a divisional rally organized by the 11-party alliance on Rangpur Zilla School Ground.
During his speech, Nahid Islam also criticized the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), accusing it of having “a history of betrayal.” He alleged that the party had betrayed the spirit of the mass uprising and failed to govern the country effectively, maintain law and order, or create employment opportunities. He further claimed that the government was “doing business in the name of nationalism.”
Referring to the Prime Minister’s recent visit to China, Nahid Islam described the trip as having produced “zero results.” He claimed that Bangladesh had received no commitments regarding the Teesta River project or the Rohingya crisis.
He argued that no country would be willing to support Bangladesh without national unity, adding that the international community would hesitate to cooperate if the ideals of the mass uprising and reform agenda were betrayed.
Nahid Islam said the alliance would remain on the streets until the mandate of the referendum was implemented. He warned that if the current government failed to deliver on its reform agenda, the 11-party alliance would launch a tougher nationwide movement.
Other speakers at the rally criticized the government’s failure to implement the Teesta Master Plan and the absence of budgetary allocations for the project. They alleged that, before the election, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had visited Rangpur, sought public support for a “Yes” vote in the referendum, and promised to implement the Teesta project, but those commitments remain unfulfilled.
The rally was chaired by Nahid Islam. The chief guest was Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Leader of the Opposition. The Special guests included: Col. (Retd.) The rally drew party leaders, activists, and supporters from all eight districts of the Rangpur Division.
