Severe storms, tornadoes and flooding have killed at least 17 people, injured more than 300 and forced over 130,000 residents to evacuate in central and southern China, state media reported on Saturday.
President Xi Jinping called for “all-out” rescue efforts as emergency teams searched for missing people and assisted affected communities.
In southern Guangxi province, heavy rain and flooding linked to Typhoon Maysak left at least six people dead, with 11 others still missing. Floodwaters caused at least 40 rivers to overflow, prompting authorities to issue the highest-level red flood alert.
In central Hubei province, thunderstorms and powerful winds killed 11 people, injured more than 300 and left one person missing. Nearly 5,000 houses were damaged, including 22 that collapsed.
A tornado struck Huanggang city, tossing trucks into the air and severely damaging warehouses and other buildings. Rescue operations remain underway as authorities assess the full extent of the destruction.
