Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Md Safiqul Islam Khan today pledged to work collectively towards building a “Clean and Green Dhaka”.

“The DNCC is working with full commitment to clean canals, evict illegal encroachments and improve the urban environment to achieve the goal,” he said.

He made the remarks as the chief guest while inaugurating a canal restoration and cleaning drive at Paris Canal in Mirpur.

The DNCC and volunteer organisation Footsteps will conduct a three-day special cleaning drive to restore the canal and improve its appearance.

Seeking cooperation from local residents, Safiqul Islam Khan said citizens must be aware of their responsibilities to ensure the sustainability of such initiatives.

“Keeping canals clean and maintaining a healthy environment is the responsibility of both the city corporation and city residents,” he said.

He also said the process of re-demarcating canals had advanced significantly and that their final boundaries would be determined soon after the eviction of illegal encroachments and rehabilitation were completed.

The DNCC administrator sought local residents’ support in the process.

He urged everyone to play a responsible role in protecting the city’s water bodies and environment and refrain from dumping waste directly into canals.

French Ambassador to Bangladesh Jean-Marc Séré-Charlet attended the inauguration of the cleaning drive.

Thanking the ambassador, Safiqul Islam Khan said discussions were under way with the French government on the necessary cooperation for the canal’s development and beautification.
