Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has announced the indefinite closure of the Strait of Hormuz, citing regional security concerns.
In a statement, the IRGC’s naval unit said the strategic waterway will remain closed until further notice and until what it described as “the complete end of US interference” in the region. During this period, no vessels will be permitted to transit the strait.
The statement blamed the United States for the current situation, warning that any attempt by Washington to use the developments as a pretext for further military action against Iran would be met with a “stronger response.” It also threatened that any new enemy military bases in the region would become legitimate targets.
The IRGC further said the United States, Israel and countries that have allowed their territories to be used as bases by “hostile forces” would bear responsibility for the consequences of any escalation.
Separately, the IRGC claimed it had intercepted a vessel attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz with its radar switched off, saying the ship was attacked and forced to stop. No further details were provided, and the claims could not be independently verified.
