Dhaka: On the first working day of the week, Dhaka commuters particularly the office goers suffered a debacle this morning in reaching their respective work places on time as severe watelogging caused by heavy downpour has brought the city life to a standstill.
In many areas, roads have been submerged, making travel difficult and, in some places, dangerous. The ongoing road excavation has worsened the situation, with one side of several roads remaining dug up. This has increased safety risks for both pedestrians and vehicles.
Many important intersections of the city experienced severe gridlock as the roads were submerged with knee to waist-deep waters. In most areas, commuters found it very hard to avail any transport to reach their work places. There are very few rickshaws and public vehicles available. The heavy rain has become synonymous with travel misery for office-goers.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department has forecast that thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds of up to 60 km/h may affect Dhaka and 17 other districts before 6:00 PM, with further rainfall expected.
The continued downpour, combined with inadequate drainage and ongoing infrastructure work, has once again highlighted the city’s vulnerability to monsoon flooding, leaving thousands of residents struggling to reach their destinations.
