Zimbabwe registered a memorable innings victory over Bangladesh for the first time in 25 years, crushing the visitors by an innings and 85 runs in the one-off Test at the Harare Sports Club on Tuesday.
The emphatic triumph, completed inside three days, was Zimbabwe’s biggest-ever innings victory in Test cricket and their first innings win against Bangladesh since 2001.
Resuming Day 3 on 40 for 1 and still trailing by 230 runs, Bangladesh needed a determined batting effort to make Zimbabwe bat again. Instead, the visitors crumbled to 185 all out in just 45 overs as the hosts’ pace attack maintained relentless pressure.
Fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani spearheaded Zimbabwe’s attack with 4 for 65 from 17 overs, while Richard Ngarava and Newman Nyamhuri provided excellent support with three and two wickets respectively.
Bangladesh’s hopes of staging a fightback suffered early blows in the morning session. Muzarabani removed opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy for 22, caught by Brian Bennett, before Mominul Haque departed for 13 after Brad Evans pulled off a stunning diving catch at third slip, reducing the tourists to 46 for 3.
Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and veteran Mushfiqur Rahim briefly steadied the innings with a 61-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Shanto looked composed before missing a low full toss from left-arm pacer Nyamhuri and being bowled for 30.
Mushfiqur, who top-scored with 34, was dismissed just before lunch after edging Muzarabani behind to wicketkeeper Tafadzwa Tsiga, leaving Bangladesh in deeper trouble.
The visitors’ lower order failed to mount any meaningful resistance after the interval. Debutant Towhid Hridoy managed only nine before becoming Muzarabani’s fourth victim, capping a disappointing Test debut with single-digit scores in both innings.
Another debutant, Amite Hasan, showed promise with an attractive 25 but edged Ngarava to captain Craig Ervine. Ngarava then removed Khaled Ahmed for a duck to finish with impressive figures of 3 for 32.
Nyamhuri wrapped up the match by dismissing Hasan Mahmud for 15, caught by Muzarabani, ending a brief final-wicket stand of 23 with Ebadot Hossain, who remained unbeaten on 12.
Zimbabwe laid the foundation for their dominant victory over the opening two days of the match. After electing to field, they bundled Bangladesh out for just 140 in the first innings before replying with a commanding 410 to establish a decisive 270-run lead.
Opener Innocent Kaia anchored Zimbabwe’s innings with a patient and match-defining 140 off 227 balls, earning the Player of the Match award.
For Bangladesh, left-arm spinner Taijul Islam was the lone bright spot with an outstanding haul of 7 for 138 in 40.2 overs, but his effort could not prevent a heavy defeat as the batters failed in both innings.
The result gives Zimbabwe a significant confidence boost ahead of the limited-overs leg of the tour. The two sides will next meet in a three-match ODI series, which begins on July 6.
