Acting Foreign Minister Humayun Kabir has discussed expanding employment opportunities for skilled and semi-skilled Bangladeshi workers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and protecting the interests of expatriate Bangladeshis living there.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Tuesday that Kabir held a meeting with UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy on the sidelines of the 28th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in St John’s, Antigua and Barbuda.

The meeting discussed various issues related to advancing bilateral and multilateral relations between Bangladesh and the UAE.

Key issues included creating more job opportunities for skilled and semi-skilled Bangladeshi workers in the UAE labour market, safeguarding the interests of Bangladeshi expatriates and attracting UAE investment in Bangladesh’s port infrastructure.

The two sides also discussed mutual support and cooperation in multilateral forums.

During the meeting, the UAE expressed its willingness to support Bangladesh in resolving the Rohingya crisis, particularly by helping address its root causes.

Both sides stressed the need to expedite the proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between Bangladesh and the UAE, saying its implementation would further expand bilateral trade, investment and economic cooperation.

Kabir is leading Bangladesh’s delegation to the Commonwealth summit, which began on November 1 and will continue until November 4.
