US President Donald Trump has criticised fellow Republicans following the emergence of results from the midterm elections, while acknowledging that Democrats had done a “good job”.
Democrats secured historic victories, taking control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump mocked Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who lost the gubernatorial race to Democrat Gina Hinojosa.
Trump said Abbott would not have lost if he had not been a “RINO” (Republican In Name Only) over the past six months.
The president also claimed that Republicans would have won “by a landslide” if he had been on the ballot.
However, Trump indicated that he was willing to accept the election results, telling The New York Times that he was “fully willing” to do so. He also said he looked forward to working with Democrats.
“We’ll probably figure something out,” he told the newspaper.
In a separate interview with Fox News, Trump said he was “somewhat surprised” by the results.
“I thought they would do better,” he said, referring to Republican candidates. “The Democrats did a good job. They fought hard.”
However, Trump warned that Democrats would send him “unreasonable” legislation, which he would veto.
“After a few months of vetoing, they’ll call and say, ‘How can we get these things done?’ And we’ll work together,” he said, adding that he had the power of veto.
Trump also posted an image of a red cap on Truth Social, resembling his signature ‘Make America Great Again’ hats but bearing the word “VETO”, in an apparent reference to his power to block legislation passed by Congress.
