An eight-hour meeting of Natore district BNP leaders failed to reach a consensus on taking organisational action against Natore-4 MP Abdul Aziz, as differences emerged among senior party leaders over the issue.

A resolution recommending action against the lawmaker was not sent to the party’s central leadership due to disagreements between Natore district BNP Convener Rahim Newaz and Member Secretary Asaduzzaman Asad.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Asad expressed frustration over the failure to forward the resolution, alleging that Rahim and some other members were reluctant to inform the central leadership about the recent controversies involving the MP.

Asad said 23 district BNP leaders attended the meeting, during which members expressed their views on Abdul Aziz.

He added that they had agreed to recommend organisational action against the lawmaker to the party’s central leadership.

However, Rahim said Abdul Aziz’s issue was not included in the meeting’s official agenda.

He claimed that the member secretary had sought opinions on the matter on his own initiative and that he was unwilling to send any recommendation to the central leadership on that basis.

Abdul Aziz, the senior joint convener of Natore district BNP, has come under criticism following the circulation of several objectionable videos on social media.

His son, Nuruzzaman Mintu, has also been arrested in connection with the murder of Chhatra Dal leader Shakil Islam.

The MP has denied the authenticity of the videos, describing them as fabricated and alleging that political opponents used artificial intelligence to damage his reputation.
