Jahangirnagar University geology professor ATM Shakhawat Hossain has been elected vice-president of the Asia Regional Executive Council of the International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment (IAEG) for the 2027–2030 term.

The election results were announced on Sunday following voting held both online and in person on November 1.

Prof Shakhawat said the IAEG works to promote sustainable infrastructure development, address climate change and improve disaster management through the application of geological knowledge.

He said Bangladesh became a member of the organisation in 2017 with the aim of putting research into practical use for public welfare rather than keeping it confined to academic publications.

“Bangladesh has recently secured a regional leadership position in the organisation with the highest number of votes from member countries,” he said.

According to Prof Shakhawat, his election will create opportunities for Bangladesh to work with 10 to 15 neighbouring countries on environmental issues and disaster management, including cooperation at the policy-making level.

Founded in 1964, the IAEG is an international non-profit scientific organisation dedicated to advancing engineering geology, environmental science and related technologies.

The organisation has more than 5,000 engineers, geologists and scientists worldwide and around 70 national groups in different countries.
