Prolonged heavy rainfall has submerged large parts of Khulna city, leaving hundreds of families stranded and causing widespread disruption to daily life.
The downpour, which began around midnight on Friday and continued until Sunday night, inundated low-lying roads, homes, drains and educational institutions across several neighbourhoods.
Residents reported water entering houses, damaging furniture and essential household items.
The worst-hit areas under Khanjahan Ali Police Station include parts of Wards 4, 7 and 9 — Jogipol, Jabdipur, Teligati, Dhalipara, Khanabari, Bil Dakatia village and the Government Laboratory High School intersection.
Under Daulatpur Police Station, Pabla, Uttar Banikpara and Maheshwarpasha Paschimpara experienced similar flooding, while low-lying areas in Khalishpur, including Bastuhara, Mujgunni and Goalkhali, also remained underwater.
Floodwaters have disrupted academic activities in several institutions, including Government Teachers Training College, Higher Secondary Teacher Training Institute, Government Laboratory High School, Women’s Technical Training Centre, Kharabari Girls High School, Shaheed Zia Adarsha Mahavidyalaya, Khanjahan Ali Technical and BM College, and multiple schools and madrasas.
Parts of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET), including its main gate, playground and residential halls, were also inundated, affecting classrooms and campus facilities.
Residents blamed poor drainage and inadequate water management for worsening the situation, as waterlogging persisted in many areas even after rainfall subsided.
