Torrential overnight rainfall has triggered severe waterlogging across Cumilla city, submerging roads, homes and low-lying areas, and causing widespread suffering for residents.
According to the local meteorological office, 107 millimetres of rain fell within just three hours between Monday morning and 9am, while total rainfall in the last 24 hours reached 138.2 millimetres.
The intense downpour turned large parts of the city into stagnant pools, with water rising to knee- and even waist-deep levels in some areas.
Thousands of people have been affected as floodwater entered homes, shops and business establishments. Low-income families, day labourers and workers have been among the hardest hit.
Most city roads remained submerged since morning, severely disrupting traffic. Office-goers struggled to reach workplaces, while many students were seen attending classes in drenched clothes.
Parents voiced concern over their children’s safety amid the worsening conditions.
The worst-affected areas include Zilla School Road, Police Lines, Race Course, Chartha, Thakurpara, BSCIC Industrial Park, Gobindapur, Muradpur and nearby Chhayabitan.
Overflowing drains have further aggravated the situation, spreading dirty water and waste onto the streets. Commuters also complained that some rickshaw and battery-run auto-rickshaw drivers doubled fares, taking advantage of the crisis.
The weather office has warned of more heavy rainfall throughout the day, raising fears that waterlogging may intensify further.
