State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed on Monday said former prime minister Sheikh Hasina would have to surrender to the authorities and go to jail if she returns to Bangladesh.
Speaking to reporters at the Foreign Ministry, she said Hasina, already a convicted person under Bangladeshi law, would face the due legal process upon her return.
“It does not matter whether she surrenders at a Bangladesh mission abroad or after returning to Bangladesh. The legal process will be the same—she will have to go to jail and face her sentence,” the state minister said.
Shama Obaed said the government was continuing diplomatic efforts through established channels regarding the matter and stressed that the law would take its own course.
Responding to another question, she said the government would not be influenced by statements made by a convicted person, adding that discussions on the issue continue through diplomatic engagement with India.
