The government has approved the creation of three new upazilas and one new thana as part of efforts to reorganise administrative boundaries and improve local governance.
The new upazilas are Fatikchhari North in Chattogram, Bangra in Cumilla, and South Gafargaon in Mymensingh, while the new thana will be Halda in Chattogram.
The approvals were granted at the 121st meeting of the National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganisation (NICA), held at the Cabinet Division in the Secretariat with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in the chair, according to the Prime Minister’s Deputy Press Secretary Mostafa Zulfiquar Hasan.
The meeting also decided to include portions of the Purbachal New Town Project located in Narayanganj and Gazipur districts under Dhaka district. These areas currently fall within the jurisdiction of RAJUK.
According to the decisions, Fatikchhari North Upazila will be formed by combining six unions from Fatikchhari Upazila in Chattogram district. Bangra Upazila will be created through the division of Muradnagar Upazila in Cumilla district, while South Gafargaon Upazila will be established with eight unions currently under Pagla Police Station in Gafargaon Upazila of Mymensingh district.
Meanwhile, Halda thana will be formed by dividing Hathazari thana in Chattogram.
Among those present at the meeting were LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir, Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam, Housing and Public Works Minister Zakaria Taher, State Minister for Public Administration Md Abdul Bari, Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani, Principal Secretary ABM Abdus Sattar, and secretaries of the relevant ministries.
