Students marched towards the Education Building on Tuesday, demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon over the hardships faced by HSC candidates during the ongoing spell of heavy rain, flooding and waterlogging.
The procession began from the Science Laboratory intersection at around 12:30 pm, but police stopped it near the Dhaka University VC Chattar, triggering a brief scuffle with the protesters.
As police blocked their advance, students chanted slogans of “Fake, fake” at the officers and renewed calls for Milon’s resignation.
Earlier in the day, HSC students staged a sit-in at the Science Laboratory intersection with a three-point demand.
The protest brought traffic in the area to a halt and caused severe congestion on surrounding roads.
The protesters alleged that the authorities forced students to sit for the HSC examinations despite severe weather and widespread waterlogging, causing immense hardship.
They claimed many candidates were unable to reach their examination centres on time.
Siam, a student of City College, said students faced extreme difficulties commuting in the adverse weather. He also alleged that examinations were held before the syllabus had been fully completed, affecting many candidates’ performance.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal Central General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir arrived at the protest site to speak with the demonstrators.
Additional police were deployed to maintain law and order.
