Police baton-charged Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinees protesting outside the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Tuesday evening as they demanded the resignation of Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon over the government’s handling of this year’s examinations.
The incident occurred around 6:30 pm when hundreds of students staged a demonstration in front of the parliament complex. Police repeatedly asked the protesters to leave the area, but they refused, triggering a scuffle. Law enforcers later dispersed the demonstrators with baton charges.
Earlier in the afternoon, the students blocked the busy Science Laboratory intersection in Dhaka, renewing their demand for the education minister’s resignation.
The protesters have been demonstrating against the government’s decision to hold the HSC and equivalent examinations despite widespread flooding and waterlogging in several parts of the country. They also alleged errors in question papers and criticised remarks reportedly made by the education minister about examinees.
The students accused the government of ignoring the hardships faced by candidates affected by floods and heavy rainfall and vowed to continue their movement until their demands are met.
Mohammad Ibne Mizan, Deputy Commissioner of the Tejgaon Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, could not be reached for comment despite repeated attempts.
