Police have arrested four members of a fraud gang accused of drugging people with sedatives mixed in coconut water and deceiving them to steal cash and valuables.
During the operation,Police recovered a stolen auto-rickshaw, a motorcycle, eight mobile phones, cash amounting to Tk 11,430, and sleeping pills used in the crimes.
According to a press release issued Tuesday afternoon, the suspects were arrested after an 18-hour operation across Bogura and Gaibandha districts.
The arrested individuals are: Ibrahim alias Iman (34) from Burichang in Cumilla, Humayun Kabir (50) from Barguna, Khaja Mia (56) from Shahjahanpur in Bogura, and Abdul Gafur (41) from Gobindaganj in Gaibandha.
Police said the gang used a well-planned method to target victims. On July 10, one member hired an auto-rickshaw under the pretext of visiting Naogaon Sadar Hospital.
Reached there accomplices joined him and offered sweets to the driver, gaining his trust. They later offered coconut water that had already been mixed with a sedative.
After consuming the drink, the driver lost consciousness, allowing the gang to flee with the vehicle.
Using CCTV footage, criminal databases, and advanced information technology, including artificial intelligence, police identified and tracked the suspects before arresting them in a coordinated operation.
Naogaon Superintendent of Police Mohammad Tariqul Islam said Ibrahim and Humayun have multiple criminal cases against them, including murder. “They have been carrying out such crimes for years by drugging victims and stealing money and belongings,” he said.
The other two suspects, Khaja Mia and Abdul Gafur, were involved in buying and selling stolen goods, police added.
All four accused are being prosecuted in accordance with the law.
