To some U.S. sports fans this will seem rather ordinary, but FIFA has announced that whoever wins Sunday’s World Cup final will for the first time receive official championship rings.
This isn’t the first time players have celebrated winning a World Cup by getting a ring — France midfielder Paul Pogba commissioned rings for all his teammates after clinching the 2018 tournament — but it is the first time that FIFA will hand out official rings.
Unlike Super Bowl or NBA rings, though, they won’t only go to the players.
As FIFA explains in a news release, 30 rings will be presented to the victorious team, and another 1,996 rings will be available for fans to buy.
One side of each ring features the FIFA World Cup trophy, while the other will be customised with the identity of the winning nation.
Every ring will be individually numbered, custom-fitted, and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
Immediately after the final, the winning captain and head coach will each receive temporary rings during the celebrations.
The 30 rings for the champions will then be individually customised to ensure a perfect fit before being officially presented to the winners at a later date.
