Tangail: Five people were killed and 11 others injured in a series of separate accidents that occurred within a span of 15 hours in Mirzapur upazila of Tangail. The incidents took place between 8:00 pm on Thursday and 11:00 am on Friday in the areas of Chakleshwar-Tholpara, Budhirpara, Kodalia, and Katra.
The first accident occurred at Chakleshwar-Tholpara, where a group of 40 garment workers, bus workers, and brick kiln laborers from Bhawal in Gazipur had gone on a boat trip. While returning around 8:00 pm, the boat became entangled with an overhead electric wire. Two passengers were electrocuted and died on the spot, while four others sustained injuries.
The deceased were identified as Jikul (18), son of Hasmat from Sherpur district, and Sajjad (31), son of Azahar Ali from Nilphamari Sadar. Police from Mirzapur Police Station recovered the bodies and sent the injured to Kumudini Hospital for treatment.
The second accident took place in the Budhirpara wetland, where Sushanta Rajbanshi (18) died while fishing from a boat. According to local sources, Sushanta and seven others had gone fishing on Thursday night when their boat became caught in a sagging rural electricity line. The group was electrocuted and thrown into the water. Although the others managed to swim ashore, Sushanta went missing. Divers from Mirzapur Fire Service recovered his body around 9:00 am on Friday after a two-hour search. Seven others were injured in the incident.
In another incident, Rustam Ali (70), a farmer from Kodalia village under Gorai Union, drowned on Friday morning while soaking jute in a canal beside his home. Family members began searching for him after he failed to return. Fire Service divers later recovered his body.
Later, at around 11:00 am on Friday, police recovered the floating body of Julhas Molla (48) from the Louhajang River in Katra under Jamurki Union. According to Sub-Inspector Naimul Haque of Mirzapur Police Station, the body was handed over to Tangail Sadar Police Station for further legal procedures.
