BNP Secretary General and Adviser for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said Bangladesh needs China’s technology, investment and economic cooperation to accelerate development and create jobs for millions of young people.

He made the remarks while addressing a seminar organised by the Bangladesh-China Friendship Association at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in the capital on Saturday.

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen attended the event as the special guest.

Recalling the long-standing ties between the two countries, Fakhrul said Bangladesh-China relations entered a new phase under the leadership of late President Ziaur Rahman and were further strengthened during the tenure of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.

Describing China as a global economic powerhouse, he said Bangladesh could significantly benefit from China’s advances in science and technology.

“With a population of around 200 million and nearly 40 million unemployed young people, Bangladesh urgently needs Chinese technology and investment to generate employment,” he said.

Fakhrul also noted the long-standing relationship between the BNP and the Communist Party of China, adding that growing academic, business and technological exchanges between young people of the two countries would further strengthen bilateral ties.

He expressed hope that China would expand cooperation beyond trade by playing a greater role in Bangladesh’s energy sector, technical education, agriculture and transport infrastructure to advance mutual interests.
