Thousands of Facebook and Messenger users in Bangladesh experienced unexpected service disruptions on Sunday, with many reporting difficulties accessing the platforms through the web version.
Users attempting to log in via browsers were greeted with “Account Temporarily Unavailable” messages, while others were unable to send messages, refresh their news feeds or access their accounts. Although the mobile apps appeared to function normally for many users, the web version remained affected.
According to outage monitoring platform Downdetector, the disruption began shortly after 1:40 pm on Sunday, July 19, with reports of service failures rapidly increasing. Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Messenger, has not yet issued an official statement explaining the cause of the outage.
Many users said Facebook pages loaded only partially, with new posts failing to appear. On Messenger, messages remained stuck in a “Sending” status for extended periods, while some users reported being automatically logged out and unable to sign back into their accounts.
Technology experts said disruptions involving major digital platforms have far-reaching consequences beyond personal communication and entertainment. Thousands of small businesses, online entrepreneurs, freelancers and news organizations in Bangladesh rely heavily on Facebook for marketing, customer engagement and daily operations. Even a temporary interruption can significantly affect their activities.
With social media playing a central role in everyday life, outages involving platforms such as Facebook and Messenger tend to trigger widespread concern among users. Until Meta provides an official explanation and restores full service, users have little option but to wait.
According to data for June 2026 from social media analytics firm NapoleonCat, Bangladesh has approximately 76.99 million Facebook users, representing about 42.5 percent of the country’s population. Of the total users, 62.6 percent are male and 37.4 percent are female. The largest user group is people aged 18 to 24, numbering around 30.4 million, while the widest gender gap in usage is seen among those aged 25 to 34, with male users significantly outnumbering females.
The latest disruption comes almost exactly two years after internet services in Bangladesh were effectively shut down on the same date in 2024. Following the fall of the previous regime, the interim government later enacted legislation prohibiting internet shutdowns, making such nationwide service suspensions illegal..
