A letter of solidarity and goodwill from Bangladesh’s opposition leader Dr Shafiqur Rahman has been formally handed over to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, marking the 10th anniversary of the failed coup attempt in Türkiye in 2016.
The letter was delivered to Turkish Ambassador to Bangladesh Ramis Sen at the embassy in Dhaka on Sunday morning.
Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General and former MP Mia Golam Parwar handed over the message on behalf of Dr Shafiqur Rahman.
In the letter, Rahman expressed deep respect for President Erdogan’s firm and courageous leadership during the July 15, 2016 coup attempt, and praised the unity and resilience of the Turkish people in defending democracy and national sovereignty.
He also commended Türkiye’s progress under Erdogan’s leadership in areas such as technology, economic development, industrial growth and self-reliance, as well as its role in promoting peace, stability and cooperation in the Muslim world.
The opposition leader reaffirmed his commitment to further strengthening the longstanding fraternal ties between Bangladesh and Türkiye.
Following the handover, Ambassador Ramis Sen guided the delegation through a photo exhibition at the embassy commemorating “July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day,” highlighting key moments of public resistance and sacrifice during the coup attempt.
Foreign affairs adviser to the Jamaat chief, Barrister Mir Ahmed Bin Qasem Arman, MP, and party foreign affairs committee member Ali Ahsan Mabrur were also present.
The meeting included cordial discussions on issues of mutual interest, with both sides expressing hope for deeper cooperation and stronger bilateral relations in the future.
