Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday reaffirmed his government’s commitment to protecting workers’ rights, improving workplace safety and aligning with global labour standards during talks with Gilbert F. Houngbo, Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO).
The meeting, held at the Prime Minister’s Office, highlighted Bangladesh’s ongoing labour reforms and efforts to build a safer, more sustainable working environment.
Houngbo praised the country’s progress, noting that its commitment to international labour standards is gaining increasing global recognition.
Both sides discussed key priorities including expanding social protection, strengthening skills development, generating employment, and preparing a workforce capable of meeting the demands of a rapidly evolving global job market.
They also reviewed progress in the readymade garment sector, workplace safety measures, and the development of the informal labour market. Emphasis was placed on deepening cooperation between the government and the ILO to accelerate reforms.
Migrant workers’ welfare featured prominently in the discussions, with both sides stressing the need for safe, orderly migration and improved skills training for overseas employment.
Congratulating the Prime Minister on assuming office, Houngbo said international confidence in Bangladesh has strengthened under its elected government. He also expressed the ILO’s readiness to expand its long-standing partnership with the country.
The ILO chief further lauded Bangladesh’s recent diplomatic achievements, including the election of Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman as President of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, calling it a reflection of the country’s growing global standing.
Senior government officials and ILO representatives attended the meeting.
