Dhaka: Bangladesh’s Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) has warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall, combined with upstream water flow, could trigger short-term flooding in eight districts of the country. The flood situation is expected to worsen over the next 24 to 72 hours.
According to meteorological agencies, heavy rainfall is forecast for the Rangpur and Sylhet divisions, as well as the Indian states of Assam, Meghalaya, and West Bengal. As a result, water levels in the country’s major rivers are expected to rise and may exceed danger levels.
The districts most at risk include Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Sylhet, Sunamganj, and Netrokona, where low-lying areas along rivers could be inundated. Water levels in the Kushiyara River have already risen above the danger mark at the Fenchuganj station in Sylhet and the Markuli station in Sunamganj.
In addition, water levels in the Brahmaputra-Jamuna river system are expected to continue rising, with rivers in parts of Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Bogura, Sirajganj, and Tangail likely to reach warning levels.
Authorities have advised residents living in river basin areas and low-lying regions to remain alert and take necessary precautions as conditions may deteriorate.
