A Dhaka court has sentenced three men to life imprisonment for their involvement in a gang rape case in Nawabganj dating back to 2002.
The convicts—Sujon, Julhash, and Mahammad—were found guilty by Judge Munshi Moshiar Rahman of the Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4.
The verdict was delivered in the presence of Sujon and Mahammad, who were immediately sent back to jail under conviction warrants. An arrest warrant was issued for Julhash, who remains a fugitive.
The tribunal also fined each of the three convicts Tk 100,000, with an additional one-year imprisonment in default of payment.
According to case documents, the incident occurred on the night of March 22, 2002. The victim was abducted after stepping out her home and was taken to a nearby paddy field in the Gorbakanda area of Nawabganj, where she was raped by the three . They later threatened her with serious consequences if she spoke about the assault.
The victim filed a case with Nawabganj Police Station, and on July 18, 2002, police submitted a charge sheet against the accused. The trial formally began after the court framed charges.
The verdict was delivered after examining seven witnesses over multiple hearings, bringing long-awaited justice in the decades-old case.
