A key stretch of one of Dhaka’s busiest corridors—from Khilgaon to the Malibagh Rail Gate—has turned into a daily ordeal for commuters, plagued by potholes, road damage and persistent waterlogging.
The severely deteriorated condition of the road has triggered chronic traffic congestion, disrupting movement even during normal hours. After rainfall, large sections remain submerged, leaving only a narrow, risky strip for vehicles to pass.
Commuters say the situation has become especially hazardous for buses and heavy transport, as parts of the road appear to have sunk. Deep potholes hidden under water frequently trap bus wheels, while smaller vehicles—including auto-rickshaws, CNG-run 3 wheel vehicle and motorcycles—struggle to navigate the point.
Residents and regular commuters have voiced growing frustration over what they describe as prolonged neglect of this vital route. Despite the issue persisting for a long time, no lasting solution has been implemented.
“Only a small portion of the road is usable, while the rest is either submerged or badly damaged,” said several commuters, urging immediate intervention.
The situation worsens during heavy rainfall, when waterlogging traffic gridlock intensifies and accident risks rise. Although ongoing flyover construction in the area has added to traffic complexity, commuters argue it cannot justify the continued lack of safe and functional road conditions.
Authorities, including the Dhaka South City Corporation, have taken temporary steps such as deploying special traffic teams during severe waterlogging. However, commuters say such measures fall short of addressing the root problem.
They are calling for urgent repairs, improved drainage and a sustainable maintenance plan to restore safe and smooth movement along the route.
For thousands who rely on the Khilgaon–Malibagh Rail Gate road every day, the demand is clear: fix the road, eliminate waterlogging and ensure safe travel before the situation leads to further accidents or prolonged disruption.
