At least 10 children have died with measles-like symptoms in Sylhet over the past five days, raising serious public health concerns in the region.
In the last 24 hours, two more children died while undergoing treatment in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), doctors said. The children, aged around five months, were receiving care at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), a total of 107 children have so far died in Sylhet with measles and related symptoms. The highest number of deaths has been reported in Sunamganj District, where 47 children have died, followed by Sylhet district with 36 fatalities.
Meanwhile, in the last 24 hours, 71 new patients with measles-like symptoms have been admitted to hospitals in Sylhet. The total number of hospitalized patients now stands at 227.
Of them, 83 patients are receiving treatment at Shaheed Shamsuddin Ahmed Hospital, while 76 are being treated at Osmani Medical College Hospital.
Health experts warn that the rising number of cases highlights the urgent need to strengthen vaccination coverage, ensure early detection, and provide timely treatment to prevent further deaths.
