Bangladesh has strongly condemned the Houthi announcement of a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia.
The government said such actions could escalate regional tensions, undermine peace and stability, and disrupt international maritime trade.
The Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Wednesday, saying, “The Government of Bangladesh strongly condemns the declaration of a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia by the Houthis.”
“Such measures not only increase tensions in the region but also pose a threat to peace, stability and the normal flow of international maritime commerce,” the statement added.
Reaffirming its commitment to freedom of navigation, the ministry stressed the importance of ensuring lawful and unhindered maritime movement in international waters, including the Red Sea, in accordance with international law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
Highlighting the global importance of the Red Sea, the ministry described it as a vital maritime route for international trade and energy supplies.
“Any disruption in the Red Sea, a crucial corridor for global trade and energy supply, would have serious economic consequences for people around the world,” the statement said.
Bangladesh urged all parties concerned to ensure the safety and security of sailors and cargo vessels operating on international sea routes.
Dhaka also called on all stakeholders to respect international law and refrain from any actions that could threaten maritime security.
