The price of green chilli has surged past Tk 200 per kilogram in Dhaka’s retail markets, with some markets selling it for as much as Tk 280 per kg, putting additional pressure on consumers.

A visit to several kitchen markets, including Mohammadpur Krishi Market, Town Hall Market, Karwan Bazar and Ashkona Hajj Camp Market, found green chilli retailing between Tk 200 and Tk 280 per kg, depending on quality and location.

Traders attributed the sharp price hike to continuous rainfall and flooding, which damaged vegetable fields, reduced harvests and disrupted supplies to wholesale markets. They said green chilli has recorded one of the steepest price increases among vegetables in recent weeks.

About a month ago, good-quality green chilli was available for Tk 100–120 per kg. However, prolonged rain and flooding over the past week and a half have significantly reduced supplies. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has also forecast several more days of rain, raising concerns that prices could remain elevated.

Market vendors said demand remains steady despite the supply shortage, while buyers expressed frustration over the rapidly rising prices. Onion prices have also increased by around Tk 5 per kg in many markets.
