Retired Major Mozaffar Hossain, a key accused in the assassination case of former President Ziaur Rahman, was produced before the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Thursday amid fresh allegations of crimes against humanity.
He was brought to the tribunal in the morning, where a hearing is scheduled before ICT-2, led by Chairman Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury.
According to the prosecution, a production warrant was issued against Mozaffar over allegations of involvement in crimes against humanity committed during the tenure of the Awami League government.
Following the order, he was presented before the tribunal, and prosecutors are expected to seek his formal arrest in the case as well as permission to interrogate him.
Earlier, on July 21, the prosecution filed a petition requesting the issuance of a production warrant against Mozaffar, who is also one of the most discussed accused in the Ziaur Rahman assassination case.
Mozaffar had remained a fugitive for nearly 45 years before being arrested on the night of July 15 from a residence in the capital’s Banani area. He was later handed over to the Military Police at Dhaka Cantonment.
Meanwhile, retired Lieutenant General Masud Uddin Chowdhury has also been brought before the tribunal in connection with a separate case involving alleged crimes against humanity during the July mass uprising in Feni.
Although the prosecution had previously sought an additional two months to submit the inquery report, the tribunal did not grant a new date, citing allegations of links between Masud and Mozaffar.
The developments mark a significant step in ongoing efforts to pursue accountability in long-standing and politically sensitive cases involving allegations of serious human rights violations.
