National Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad returned to Bangladesh from Thailand on Friday, arriving at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at around 12:15 pm.
The Speaker had left Dhaka for Bangkok on a brief visit on July 19. According to the Parliament Secretariat, he travelled to the Thai capital for medical treatment and was originally scheduled to return on July 26.
His early return has intensified speculation surrounding the possible resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin. The discussion gained momentum after reports emerged that the President was preparing to step down.
Under Bangladesh’s Constitution, the President submits a resignation letter to the Speaker. If the President resigns, the Speaker assumes the responsibilities of the office until a new President is elected.
The Speaker’s return ahead of schedule has fueled political interest, although no official announcement has yet been made regarding the President’s reported resignation.
