Iran rejects US ceasefire proposal

24 July 2026 15:04 Updated: 24 July 2026 15:04

Iran has rejected a new US proposal for a ceasefire as fighting between the two countries enters its second week, according to a report by The New York Times.

The report, published on Friday, cited multiple Iranian and Iraqi officials familiar with the matter as saying the proposal was conveyed to Tehran by Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi following his recent meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House.

Details of the US proposal were not disclosed. However, Iranian officials described it as the only ceasefire offer currently on the table.

According to the report, Tehran rejected the proposal because it failed to address key issues related to control of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically vital shipping route.

The New York Times noted that it could not independently verify the information with Iranian authorities.

The report comes as hostilities between the United States and Iran continue, with diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire yet to produce a breakthrough.
