DHAKA: An activists of Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal (JCD) was shot dead and two others were injured after unidentified assailants opened fire in the Mirpur-13 area of the capital late Friday night.
The deceased, Yusuf Ali, 45, was a worker of Kafrul Thana Jubo Dal. He hailed from Shakral village in Uzirpur upazila of Barishal district and had been living in the West Baishtaki area of Kafrul. The injured have been identified as Nalam Sardar, 45, a vegetable trader, and Monir Hossain, 32, a roadside clothing vendor.
The shooting took place around 12:30 a.m. in front of Opex Garments in Mirpur-13’s E-Block. The three victims were initially taken to a nearby hospital before being transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared Yusuf Ali dead.
According to Mamun and Sajib, who accompanied the victims to the hospital, they had been chatting with Yusuf Ali when four to five young men were seen loitering nearby. Growing suspicious, Yusuf asked the group to identify themselves. Moments later, the suspects allegedly opened fire indiscriminately.
Yusuf Ali was struck by a bullet in the right side of his chest, while Monir was shot in the right leg and Nalam sustained a gunshot wound to the head.
The witnesses also said local residents managed to capture one of the alleged attackers and handed him over to the police. However, they were unable to identify him.
Inspector Md. Faruk, in charge of the police camp at DMCH, said Yusuf Ali’s body has been kept in the hospital morgue for an autopsy. He confirmed that Yusuf suffered a gunshot wound to the right side of his chest, while the two injured victims are receiving treatment in the hospital’s emergency department.
Confirming the incident, Kafrul Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saiful Islam said three people were shot in the attack. Yusuf Ali later died at the hospital, while the other two remain under treatment.
Police said efforts are underway to identify and arrest those involved in the shooting.
