Major rivers continue to swell due to rainfall

Dhaka: Water levels in several major rivers across Bangladesh are rising due to heavy rainfall and runoff from upstream areas, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) under the Bangladesh Water Development Board.

Based on the latest data released on July 25, the FFWC said water levels have shown an increasing trend at several monitoring points in the country’s northern and northeastern regions.

In its regular bulletin, the FFWC said that the active monsoon, combined with heavy to very heavy rainfall over Bangladesh and upstream catchment areas in India, has caused water levels in major rivers to either remain steady or continue rising.

The bulletin noted that sections of the Surma, Kushiyara, Brahmaputra-Jamuna, and Teesta river basins are flowing close to danger or warning levels. As a result, low-lying areas along these rivers may face short-term flooding or localized waterlogging.

The authorities said they are closely monitoring the situation and have advised people living in riverside areas to remain alert. Local administrations in districts vulnerable to flash floods and hill runoff have also been instructed to stay prepared to respond quickly to any emergency.
