Thalapathy Vijay’s much-anticipated farewell film, Jana Nayagan, has made a spectacular start at the box office, setting multiple records within days of its release and reinforcing the actor’s enduring popularity ahead of his full-time entry into politics.

Directed by H. Vinoth, the action drama hit theatres on July 23 to packed houses, fan celebrations and strong advance bookings across India and overseas. The film has already crossed ₹112.5 crore in worldwide gross collections within just two days of release, making it one of the biggest Tamil releases of 2026.

Even before its first screening, Jana Nayagan had entered the record books by selling more than one million tickets on BookMyShow in advance. The achievement made Vijay the first Indian actor to have three consecutive films—Varisu, The Greatest of All Time (GOAT) and Jana Nayagan—cross the one-million pre-sales milestone on the ticketing platform.

The film has also attracted attention for its historical significance. It is being described as the first film headlined by a sitting Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in nearly 50 years, adding to the public interest surrounding its release.

Despite a sharp decline in collections on its second day, the film has maintained a strong overall performance. According to early trade estimates, Jana Nayagan collected around ₹11.7 crore net in India on Friday, representing a 50.5 percent drop from its blockbuster opening day.

Trade analysts, however, said the decline was expected after the massive first-day turnout by Vijay’s devoted fan base. They noted that films driven by intense opening-day demand often experience a noticeable slowdown on the following day.

The film has reportedly crossed the ₹50 crore India net mark within 48 hours, while overseas markets have made a significant contribution to its worldwide earnings.

Tamil Nadu continues to be the film’s strongest market, with theatres in Chennai and other major cities reporting healthy occupancy. The Tamil version has significantly outperformed dubbed releases in other languages, while international markets, particularly the Gulf countries, the United Kingdom and other regions with large Tamil-speaking communities, have also delivered robust returns.

Industry observers believe the emotional appeal of what is being promoted as Vijay’s final film before he devotes himself to politics has played a key role in attracting audiences.

Trade experts now expect collections to receive another boost over the weekend as family audiences join Vijay’s loyal fan base in cinemas. If the film maintains its momentum through Saturday and Sunday, Jana Nayagan is expected to strengthen its position among the highest-grossing Tamil films of the year.
