The government has officially appointed National Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed to perform the duties of the President following the resignation of Mohammed Shahabuddin, according to a gazette notification issued by the Cabinet Division.
The notification, issued on Friday, said Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Bir Bikram, will discharge the functions of the President under Article 54 of the Constitution until a new President is elected.
It stated that President Mohammed Shahabuddin vacated the office on July 24, 2026, and that the order takes immediate effect.
Shahabuddin resigned on Friday citing serious health complications, bringing his tenure as Bangladesh’s 22nd President to an early end. Under the Constitution, when the office of the President falls vacant, the Speaker of Parliament assumes the responsibilities of the office until Parliament elects a successor.
The Election Commission is expected to oversee the election of a new President within the constitutional timeframe, while Parliament is likely to complete the process during its regular September session.
Meanwhile, Acting President Hafiz Uddin Ahmed is scheduled to begin his official engagements on Sunday.
According to BNP Media Cell member Shayrul Kabir Khan, the Acting President will place wreaths at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar at 11:30 am to pay tribute to the Liberation War martyrs.
He will later visit the grave of former President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar at 12:30 pm to pay his respects and offer prayers.
