The prosecution has filed formal charges against 19 individuals in a crimes against humanity case over the killing of Ashabul Yamin during the July Uprising in Savar.
The charges were submitted to the registrar of the International Crimes Tribunal on 26 July, following what prosecutors described as a lengthy investigation. A hearing on the charges is scheduled for today.
According to the prosecution, seven of the accused are currently in custody. They include several former law enforcement officials, among them Md Abdullahil Kafi and Md Shahidul Islam, along with other police personnel.
Yamin, a fourth-year student of computer science and engineering at the Military Institute of Science and Technology, was killed during a protest on 18 July 2024.
The case statement alleges that police and activists linked to the Awami League attacked a peaceful demonstration organised by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement at Savar Bazar Bus Stand.
According to the complaint, Yamin was dragged toward a police armoured vehicle and shot in the chest around 1:30pm, causing severe injuries. Police personnel later placed him on the vehicle and drove it back and forth to intimidate the public.
He was later thrown onto the road in a critically injured state. Although he was believed to be dead, witnesses said he was still breathing at the time. Local people rescued him and took him to Enam Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The case marks a significant development in efforts to bring accountability for alleged abuses during the July Uprising, as legal proceedings now move forward against the accused.
