The Election Commission (EC) will seek an appointment with the acting Speaker before announcing the schedule for Bangladesh’s presidential election, Senior EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said on Sunday.
Speaking to reporters at the Election Commission headquarters in Dhaka, Ahmed said Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A.M.M. Nasir Uddin will hold a courtesy meeting with Acting Speaker Kaiser Kamal, in line with the legal procedure for conducting the presidential election.
Earlier in the day, the CEC, election commissioners and the senior EC secretary held an unscheduled meeting to review the legal framework governing the presidential election. The meeting decided that discussions with the acting Speaker would be held before finalising the next steps for announcing the election schedule.
Under Bangladesh’s Constitution, the President is elected by members of Parliament through an indirect vote.
As part of the process, the Parliament Secretariat will send the list of sitting lawmakers to the Election Commission, which will prepare the official electoral roll for the presidential election. The EC will announce the election schedule after completing the required formalities following consultations with the acting Speaker.
