Kushtia: National Citizen Party (NCP) Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain has alleged that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has reached an understanding with recently resigned President Mohammed Shahabuddin, also known as Chuppu, and is seeking to provide him with a “safe exit.”
Speaking to reporters on Sunday (July 26) during a discussion and cultural program titled “Remembering the July Monsoon Uprising” at the Islamic University in Kushtia, Akhtar made the remarks while responding to questions from journalists.
Addressing a question about legal action against the former president, Akhtar said many people have argued that Article 51 of the Constitution prevents any proceedings against Shahabuddin. He dismissed that interpretation as incorrect.
“Article 51 served as his legal protection only while he was President. Now that he is no longer in office, he must be brought under the law,” Akhtar said.
He also cited the example of former President Hussain Muhammad Ershad, noting that Ershad was jailed just six days after resigning from the presidency.
Responding to another question regarding the July Charter, Akhtar accused the BNP of refusing to honor the outcome of the referendum after coming to power.
“According to the referendum’s verdict, BNP lawmakers were supposed to take the oath of the Constitutional Reform Council. Instead, they have taken a position against the referendum. If the BNP fails to implement the verdict, the people will make the decision. We will work with the people to ensure that the verdict is implemented,” he said.
The event was also attended by NCP Women’s MP Dr. Mahmuda Mitu, NCP leader Sarwar Tushar, Student Shakti President Zahid Ahsan, and other leaders and activists of the organization.
