Bangladesh Bank has ruled out any separate or targeted investigation into former president Md. Shahabuddin Chuppu, the central bank’s Executive Director and Spokesperson Arief Hossain Khan said on Sunday.
Speaking to reporters at the central bank, Arief said no fresh investigation specifically targeting Shahabuddin is currently under consideration, given that he served as the country’s highest constitutional office-holder.
However, he said any evidence linking the former president to financial irregularities uncovered during ongoing or previous institutional investigations would be dealt with in accordance with existing laws and regulations.
“Investigations are currently being conducted at various institutions to strengthen good governance in the banking sector,” the spokesperson said, stressing that regulatory oversight is focused on institutions rather than on individuals.
“If any irregularity or involvement of an individual or entity is established during the investigations, action will be taken under the relevant laws,” he added.
Shahabuddin resigned as president on Friday. On Sunday, he left Bangabhaban and moved to his personal residence in Gulshan, Dhaka.
